Summer & Speech Sounds
Summer is here! Your child has participated in speech therapy all school year and they are really starting to sound better! But what happens once summer hits and school speech therapy stops? How can you help your child maintain their speech gains and further improve throughout the summer?
Before summer starts, ask your child’s school speech-language pathologist for a copy of their IEP. The IEP lists your child’s goals and how far they have come, as well as the strategies used to help them.
Find out the cues that helped your child in speech. Set aside a short time period each day to work on difficult speech sounds with your child using the cues provided by the speech therapist.
Model correct production of the speech sounds that your child struggles with.
Celebrate your child when they correctly produce speech sounds they have issues with. For example, “I love how you said the S sound there!”
Work with a private speech therapist throughout the summer.
Collectively the above strategies will ensure that your child’s hard work does not go to waste.
